Reading

Bad Things Happen by Harry Dolan is his first novel and on that note, it is impressive. You know I have been in my mystery zone this year and I found this bad boy for $3 at a book market! So with no expectations, I went in blind. A man, David Loogan, lives in Ann Arbor hoping to escape his shadowy past. Starts working with a guy, sleeps with his wife, people die, a lot of people, and now we have to figure out who. I really liked the lead up and the writing was very well done and in a noir-ish style that gave the book a very particular vibe.

I like a lot of the twists but, and this is a spoiler alert, there are like 3 murderers! and I understand some of their motives but theres one woman who murders someone out of jealousy but we are NEVER given anything in the story to hint at that so it just didn't feel satisfying. And, all of these murders happen within the same week for all different reasons to a close knit group? yeah right. I don't know if I can really say I liked this book. It made me curious, and kept me reading

Another mystery? obviously. This one honestly hurt my brain brain but in the best way, I could not put it down, partially because I was invested and partially because I was afraid all of my knowledge would fall out of my head.

This book is very unique, a whodunit, Clue vibes with a bit of fantasy, dark, scary, slightly historical goodness. All you know at the beginning is that Evelyn Hardcastle will be murdered at 11 PM and you, the narrator, will live the day 8 times, through the lives of eight different people. Those eight people are guests at a dilapidated mansion hosted by the Hardcastles. I don’t want to give anything away so i will leave it at that but my brain was fried going back and forth with the timelines and the abundance of characters but the ending wasn’t corny or obvious and ended up being very satisfying. Never expected it.

Treat

The treat this week was having a day off for my birthday! I am now 26 and had a very grown up birthday, started with a nice long walk with my dog in beautiful weather, came home and read/lounged on the couch until my yoga class that felt amazing. Had a lovely lunch with my parents, then lounged and read for the rest of the day until a nice little movie date night with my boyfriend. Finally got him to watch a rom com cause guess what, what the birthday girl wants goes (: You’ve Got Mail was the movie of choice and he said he liked it (but I have my doubts). I am just a Meg Ryan girl and next will definitely be When Harry Met Sally.

& because it was birthday week I did not put much time into this (:
